Girl on the Right Kicks 5k Ass in Honor of Child Sexual Abuse Survivors

What a wonderful weekend! Through my partnership with Midland’s Safe & Sound Child Advocacy Center, I was blessed with an opportunity to give back to my community. Saturday’s Superhero 5k Fun Run & Walk was met with beautiful sunshine and a dedicated group of planners and participants.

I am surprised at how much fun my first 5k was! While my Fibromyalgia-plagued body wasn’t exactly nice to me, I pushed past the pain and fatigue. Early on, I wanted desperately to turn around and head back to the safety of my display table and the folding chair calling my name.

5k 2The Girl on the Right didn’t quit! I told that limiting, snarky inner voice to bug off and kept going. At one point I grabbed my husband’s hand and asked him to pull me. I was desperate to reach my goal. There is power in perseverance and determination, my friends. That determination ultimately had me bedridden for the remainder of the evening, but I am proud of myself. I am learning to say that more often, and to allow those feelings of pride take root. For a girl that’s felt unlovable the majority of her life, it is quite an accomplishment.

5k 5This fun run/walk thing has really sparked a fire. I plan to look at additional events, aside from a continuing partnership with Safe & Sound, to support. There are many to choose from, and various causes that are close to my heart. This one was personal, however, and I am grateful for every second my feet hit the trail, every smile from little superheroes as they indulged in free Ring Pops from my table, and for the many ladies and men who took time out of their busy life to “walk the talk.”

Faith in humanity restored!
